Hotel Development

  • Tourism in Marquette County has been on a steady upward trajectory for years, and its importance to the economy is indisputable: a 2019 Pure Michigan report shows that tourism-related jobs make up 15% of the County's employment, producing $110 million in total income.

  • Currently there is no flag hotel within a 20-mile radius of Sawyer International Airport and the proposed hotel site.

  • Sawyer International Airport services approximately 88,500 passengers annually.

  • Air carrier crews stay in Marquette due to lack of nearby options.

  • Over 5,000 room nights come from Sawyer businesses annually.

  • Sawyer continues to house temporary Air Force related tenants who bring a staff of approximately 20 people to the community for three to four months to conduct winter testing.

  • Access to major snowmobile trails.

  • 18-hole golf course on site

  • Sawyer continues to grow and attract new tenants.

  • Only available meeting space that is central to two major cities, Escanaba and Marquette.

  • Pending data center project to bring in various military clients and staff on ongoing basis.

The property owners have explored three hospitality concepts at Sawyer.

A RV Campground: Creating an RV campground offers a distinct opportunity to cater to a growing segment of travelers who seek adventure and flexibility. This venue can be designed to provide a range of amenities and experiences, from basic sites with essential hookups to luxury "glamping" options with upscale facilities.

A Flag Hotel: Considering the redevelopment of two dormitory buildings into a Comfort Inn, the owners have secured site plan drawings and approvals.

Truck Stop/Motel 6/Extended Stay: Capitalizing on this unique site, the owners have conceptualized a Truck Stop and extended stay facility across from Potlatch Lumber which receives 70 logging truck each day.
